Folding Aero Community Center

Activity Deserts (ak-ˈti-və-tē ˈde-zərt) – urban communities that lack opportunities or inlets for interaction amongst each other. The residents, who live in these communities, essentially have to travel a mile or more to other neighborhoods in order to gain a sense of community interaction. This type of environment is found throughout cities and towns of Indiana, but appears to be a pressing issue on the East Side of Indianapolis. The neighborhood of Fall Creek happens to be one of the communities experiencing an Activity Desert. Using Recycled Airplane wings of Boeing 787, instead of letting the composite metal rot in a graveyard, the pieces were folded, cut, and connected at distinct points to create user defined spaces. The 787 wing was selected for materials since the composite material is easy to bend, cut through, and cannot be thrown away. The Folding Aero Community Center intendeds to extend the life or after life of the 787 and the Fall Creek Neighborhood by servicing the community with activity while the context influence the program in an Aero Dynamic way.
